ABOUT CITY HARVEST:
More than 1.5 million New Yorkers currently live in poverty. City Harvest regularly delivers food to nearly 600 emergency food programs in New York City, helping provide food to over 260,000 men, women and children each week.

City Harvest's mission is working to end hunger across the five boroughs. They do this by rescuing and distributing excess food (from restaurants for example), educating lower-income people to encourage self-sufficiency, and forging innovative partnerships within communities to bring thousands of hungry New Yorkers their next meal.

Now serving New York City for more than 25 years, City Harvest is the world's first and New York City's only food rescue organization. When it was founded in 1982, City Harvest was run entirely by volunteers who connected a handful of neighborhood restaurants to food programs serving meals to those in need.

City Harvest is one of only 25 human service charities in New York City that meet all requirements to be considered an exceptional charity.

YOU CAN VOLUNTEER:
One day per month, All Souls partners with City Harvest by volunteering for the Greenmarket Rescue Team which helps feed over 260,000 hungry New Yorkers each week.

HOW:
Volunteers visit the Greenmarket in Union Square to collect excess food from farmers and then load the food onto City Harvest trucks, which deliver directly to community programs that feed hungry people. This benefits both the farmer and the hungry person.

The entire effort takes less than two hours and can be done right after work. June through December on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings, volunteers gather at the Union Square Greenmarket at 5:30 PM and are generally done by 7:00 PM.

WHAT TO DO:
The only requirement is that you must be at least 15 years old and must contact us to attend an orientation session.

Orientations fill up fast, so it is wise to plan in advance by attending an orientation session in the spring or early summer months before high season.

City Harvest orientations are always at the same time and place, usually held on the second Tuesday of the month, each month:

When: 6:00 PM
Where: 575 Eighth Ave, 4th floor, between 38th - 39th Streets

Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering.
