According to an article in the NY Times this year, the poverty barometer in New York City measured $30,000 annual income for a family of four in 2008. The federal measure was $22K. This is because of the high cost of housing in the city. People aren’t necessarily losing their jobs in the midst of the recession, but are moving down the job ladder. Bottom line—around one in five working families in NYC earns below the poverty line.
Sex trafficking in New York City

I have always thought of sex trafficking as a foreign problem, something you hear of in Thailand or an equally distant place. I never considered that it might be a very real problem in the United States, and definitely not in New York City. That was until I was introduced to G.E.M.S.
